THE POWER OF TENS

♥ AQT
♦ T95
♣ T954
Partner opens 1NT, showing 15-17 HCP.
What is your call?
►
You have 9 HCP and
you have to decide whether to invite game, or whether to bid 3NT all by
yourself. The usual benchmark for going to game unaided is “a good 9 or
better”. Does this hand qualify as a “good 9”?
►
One thing that makes this 9-count
not so good is the square shape (3-3-3-4), you can almost subtract a HCP for
that alone. Does this make the hand a “bad 9”? No, not at all, look at that
awesome array of intermediate cards! All those lovely Tens may not count for
anything on the 4-3-2-1 HCP scale but they certainly count for something in the
play of the hand, especially in No Trump contracts. So, South disregards the
dismal distribution and, rejoicing in those splendid Tens, goes directly to
3NT.

North has a minimum 1NT opening
(and would have declined a game invitation) but, even so, 3NT is a fine
contract. The black Tens protect Declarer (North) against the enemy suits and
the red Tens help Declarer to build tricks in his own suits. How will the play
go?
►
East will probably lead a Spade
which gives Declarer a third trick in that suit and nine altogether (when the
♥J
drops). Playing duplicate, Declarer will try for an overtrick. She’ll cross to
Dummy’s ♥Q,
and lead the ♦T
from the board. When the defense get in with their Diamond they must promptly
shift to a Club if they want to hold Declarer to nine tricks … failure to do so
and Declarer will get her overtrick.
Next, see how hopeless 3NT is without those lovely
Tens ...

This is the same deal but with all of South’s
Tens liberally sprinkled over the E-W hands. Now Declarer has seven top tricks
and (with both red suits 4-2) she has no possibility for any more. So,
here’s to those Tens, the most underrated cards in
the deck!
